Mother, two children, displaced by fire.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (September 7, 2010) — The home of Sherlisa Gear, seven-year-old Anyllah, and five-week-old Jakai, was devastated by fire early Sunday morning, September 5.  Due to a power outage on the block, the family was with relatives at the time. The fire apparently started in and destroyed the kitchen when the electricity came back on.  With significant smoke and water damage, and several holes in the roof, the house is uninhabitable.  The home’s landlord, Pines Community Center, Inc., a 501 C3 non-profit, seeks the community’s help for this young family. Although heavily smoke damaged, Sherlisa hopes that, with some elbow grease, most of her furniture and clothes can be salvaged. The mattresses, including the one in the baby’s crib, will probably need to be replaced, as will her washer, dryer, and most kitchen goods.

The most urgent needs are a Section-8 approved home in the $650 range, financial donations, and volunteers to assist with salvage and moving. To volunteer or donate goods, please call PCC Board President Stephanie Perry at 358-7245. Contributions may be mailed to 107 Johnson Street, Chapel Hill, NC  27516. Any help is gratefully accepted.
