CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (June 9, 2010) JUNETEENTH commemorates the day the last slaves in America learned they were free.  The Orange County celebration of this historic event will be held on June 19 from noon – 5:30 p.m. at Hargraves Recreation Center, 216 N. Roberson St., Chapel Hill.  Planned activities include speeches by public officials, oration on Juneteenth’s history, food, vendor displays, health booths, a basketball tournament, entertainment, games, a bounce house, the incredibly moving Harambee Circle, and an opportunity for every public official and every candidate on this fall’s ballot who attends the opening ceremony to offer a word of greeting.

Proceeds will benefit Pine Knolls Community Center programming, including affordable housing, enrichment for school children, and the effort to bring a Boys and Girls Club to Chapel Hill.

Sponsored by a coalition of community organizations, this year’s event is dedicated to Dr. Ted Parrish, who was severely injured in a recent fall from a ladder. Dr. Parrish, an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Education at North Carolina Central University, is a long-time community activist. Just the tip of the iceberg of his involvements includes:  immediate past president of Pine Knolls Community Center, 16 years on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board, instrumental in bringing a Juneteenth commemoration to Chapel Hill, and the driving force behind the soon-to-be-realized quest to bring a Boys and Girls Club to our area.

Individuals, businesses, churches, candidates – anyone who wants - can help sponsor Juneteenth by purchasing an ad in the program booklet ($10 - $100), renting a vendor table ($25), cash or in-kind donations, or just showing up to this free, family-friendly event!

Food, paper goods, prizes, in-kind, and cash donations are gratefully accepted and will be tax deductible as allowed by law. For more information click on the Juneteenth link at pineknollslearningcenter.org or contact: Stephanie Perry at 919-358-7345, stephbperry@aol.com.
